Other Names: Garden Valerian, Garden Helitrope, Phu, Heal-All, Setewale, English Valerian & Valeriana. 

Valerian root has been used in traditional medicine for at least 2,000 years to promote tranquility and improve sleep. Whilst it is most commonly used for sleep disorders, especially the inability to sleep (insomnia) it is also used for anxiety and psychological stress (limited scientific research available) and is often referred to as “nature’s Valium.” . Research has also shown it to be useful for menopausal symptoms as well as many other problems – hence the alternative name ‘heal-all’. The name “valerian” is derived from the Latin verb valere, which means “to be strong” or “to be healthy.” 


Valerian Root is listed as having the following properties: 

  • Anxiolytic: used to reduce anxiety
  • Sedative: promoting calm or inducing sleep
  • Anticonvulsant: A substance that may prevent convulsions (seizures)
  • Antibacterial: Active against bacteria 
  • Anti-diuretic: A substance that helps to control fluid balance in an animal’s body by reducing urination
  • Antiseptic: Preventing the growth of disease-causing microorganisms
  • Antispasmodic: used to relieve spasm of involuntary muscles 
  • Anti-inflammatory: A substance that reduces inflammation or swelling. 
  • Known pharmacologically active compounds detected in valerian extract are:
  • Alkaloids: actinidine, catinine, valerianine, and valerine
  • Isovaleramide,
  • Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) – neurotransmitter connected to the sedative effects of the plant
  • Valeric acid
  • Valepotriates, acevaltrate, isovaltrate and valtrate
  • Volatile oil containing active sesquiterpenes (acetoxivalerenic acid, valerenic acid)
  • Flavanones such as hesperidin, 6-methylapigenin and linarin

  • Is Wildcrafted (grown naturally free from pollutants) and sustainably harvested
  • Not heat treated or irradiated and does not contain GMO’s
  • Should be infused in boiling water before consumption.

Cautions for Valerian Root: Not recommended during pregnancy or breast feeding. Not recommended for those taking barbituates or benzodiazepine medication. If used over long periods it can cause withdrawal symptoms.
